5 Simple Sales Techniques That Actually Work for Small Businesses
Share
The theme for our October Positive Business Club box is Sales Success! An important theme as we head in Black Friday and Christmas.
Sales doesn't have to feel complicated or overwhelming. As a small business owner, you don't need fancy systems or a large marketing budget to attract your ideal customer or increase awareness of your brand.
Here are five sales strategies you can start using today to grow your business with confidence and positivity.
1. Ask Questions About Your Ideal Customer
Ask yourself questions about your potential customer's challenges, goals and needs. What problem does your service or product solve?
Why it works: When you understand what someone truly needs, you can position your product or service as the solution they have been looking for.
Try this: Next time someone shows interest in what you do, ask "What's your biggest challenge right now?" Listen carefully to their answer, then explain how you can help with that specific problem.
2. Share Customer Success Stories
Nothing sells better than proof that your product or service actually works. Your existing customers are your best sales tool!
Why it works: Testimonials and case studies build trust and help potential customers see themselves achieving similar results. It takes the risk out of their decision as they have evidence.
Try this: Reach out to 3-5 happy customers and ask if they'd be willing to share their experience. Use their stories on your website, social media - by creating reels, carousels and Instagram Stories. Encourage user-generated content to engage potential customers.
3. Create Urgency (The Authentic Way)
You don't need to be pushy to encourage people to take action. Genuine urgency works when it's based on real limitations.
Why it works: When people know they might miss out, they're more likely to make a decision rather than endlessly postponing it.
Try this:
- Limited quantities: "I only have 10 boxes available this month"
- Time-sensitive bonuses: "Order by Friday and receive a free [bonus item]"
Communicate real deadlines and limited availability.
4. Make It Easy to Say Yes
Remove every possible barrier between your customer and their purchase. The easier you make it, the more sales you will receive.
Why it works: When people have to work too hard to buy from you, they simply won't.
Try this:
- Clear pricing on your website (no "contact us for pricing")
- Simple checkout process
- Multiple payment options
- Clear next steps ("Click here to order" not "Get in touch to discuss")
- Answer common questions upfront with an FAQ section
Look at your current sales process and ask yourself: "Where might someone get stuck or confused?" Then fix those problem points.
5. Make use of all communication platforms
Ensure details of your product or service offering are across all your communication channels, this could be your website, social media platforms, Youtube channel and online newsletter.
